About

Hi, I'm Kyle Wofford

It’s been my life’s mission to heal my relationship with cooking and with food and I want to help you do the same.

Everything changed with a bike ride.

I was a 19-yr-old recent transplant from El Paso, TX to Boulder, CO, on my morning commute to work. While struggling up a large hill, a man in his 70s zoomed past me on his bike. Being an arrogant, competitive athlete, there was no way I was going to let him beat me. I gave it everything I had – lungs burning, legs going to rubber – and he still pulled away with ease.

I was so confused. What just happened? How did that happen?

Men where I grew up couldn’t do that. In their 50s their physical health started to deteriorate. In their 60s they were desperately hanging on. Most were gone by their early 70s. It was all I knew and I had resigned myself to this same fate.

The questions kept eating at me, so I opened my eyes and started to pay attention. For the first time, I saw all around me older adults who looked healthy and joyful. They were more active than I expected, and also ate very differently than anything I’d ever experienced.

A new potential path revealed itself, bringing both excitement and tremendous pain. Memories of being a terrified 13-year-old holding my dad’s hand through a massive heart attack. Watching helplessly as my mom struggled with diabetes, obesity, eating disorders, and a life of pain. Losing my last grandparent while still in middle school. I assumed my genes would lay the same plans for me.

But I now saw a new way, a new possibility. And I made myself a promise:

This cycle ends with me. It ends now

This was an act of self preservation.
An act of defiance.
An act of hope.

Man standing with pile of dried chiles to make mole. Play with your food.

So began my journey down the rabbit hole.

At 19, I deleted everything I knew about cooking + food and started over with 1 pan, 1 pot, 1 knife, 1 cutting board, and 1 cookbook.

Over the last 27 years, I've:

What began through sheer determination, has become:

The birth of Hey Food

Looking back, I’ve been on the path to Hey Food my whole life. My grandparents were farmers & ranchers and both my parents were lifelong teachers. They all instilled in me a sense of endless curiosity and love of learning as well as a push to always experiment and grow.

I’ve also watched my family’s suffering and was galvanized by the understanding of how deep the abyss can be at the end of the standard American diet.

It’s now my mission to help others heal their relationship with cooking and turn it into a lifetime of play, connection, and health.

In my personal life

I’m a proud dad, the volunteer Events Director for Slow Food Boulder, and a recovering band manager. You’ll usually find me in the kitchen, on the soccer field, visiting my local farmers, or on a picnic in the mountains.

Thanks for going on this journey with me.
